Mr. Silver By Digitalis, the Digital Avatar For Sally! Sally Foster pulled her jacket closer about her as she walked through the freezing night air towards the warmth of her hotel room and the coziness of her bed. The mist had closed in early tonight and she could only see a few meters ahead. Across the road from her she could hear someone else's footsteps echoing in the stillness, no doubt another person headed for home. But, she reminded herself, the hotel room wasn't really her home, it was just a stopgap measure until she found a job and could settle into her own house or apartment. Suddenly nervous, she glanced behind herself, sure she could feel someone watching her. Seeing nothing but the cloying mist, she faced forward again and hurried onwards. She was nearing the hotel when it happened, everything was still until three men were suddenly blocking her path. She took one look at their ski masks, spun, and started running back the way she had come. Suddenly two more men stood in her way, one holding an iron pipe, the other a metal chain. She spun again, and came face to face with one of the men she had run from. Hardly stopping to think, she drew her arm back, balled her hand into a fist and punched him square in the gut. She was as surprised as he was when the force flung him ten meters backwards, his flight ending in a thud as he impacted a brick wall. For a second nobody moved. Then Sally took the initiative, turning to the next thug and delivering a massive uppercut to his jaw. The mugger rose fifteen meters into the air before falling back down to earth, hitting the pavement with a crunch. She dodged to the side, just in time as the remaining three criminals charged through the area where she had just been standing. As soon as they realized that they had missed their target, they halted their momentum and rushed towards her new position. All of a sudden Sally was gripped by a wild urge, and as they approached she jumped high into the air, performing a roundhouse kick that brought two of her opponents down. The last standing thug turned to run, but Sally moved, she didn't know how, and she was suddenly standing in front of him. His mouth opened in disbelief, but before he could dash off in another direction Sally finished him with a back flip kick, her two feet connecting with his jaw as her body spun around. Landing on her feet, she looked around at the five unconscious bodies lying on the ground. She lost track of time, she could have been standing there for seconds, minutes or hours before she head the voice. "Nicely done!" She spun around to see a man- no, a teenager, standing behind her with his hands in his pockets. He couldn't have been more than eighteen, and he was dressed all in black. Black shoes, black trousers, black shirt and a long black coat. He had dark hair, but it was too dark to make out his eye color, even if he hadn't been wearing a pair of silver sunglasses. "Who are you?" Sally challenged the stranger. "You can call me Mr. Silver" he replied "And you of course, unless I have been misinformed, are Sally Foster!" He spoke with a jovial tone, sounding pleased about something. He shivered suddenly, as if he had just come outside after spending a long time in a warm room, and was just now noticing the cold. He beckoned for Sally to follow him. Not knowing what else to do, Sally decided to follow him, and after a short walk they arrived at a large, silver, expensive-looking Italian sports car. With a touch of a finger on a concealed remote, Mr. Silver opened gull-wing doors on either side of the vehicle. He slipped into the driver's seat and, after gesturing for Sally to climb in the passenger door, pulled his own door down. Sensing that it was safe, Sally climbed in a closed the door. Mr. Silver flicked a control switch and the interior of the car was suddenly blasted with hot air. With a sigh of comfort Mr. Silver stretched out on the luxuriant leather seat. After a few seconds he straightened up and turned to Sally. "Now, Miss Foster," he began "As you have just found out, you are one of a select few people blessed with an outstanding natural ability for combat. My Organization and I are dedicated to harnessing these powers for the good of mankind. First I must tell you a little story... Our Earth is not as four-dimensional as it may seem. There is a dimension on this planet that is unique in the universe, a world existing parallel to our main sphere of reality. This world too is populated by humans, but it is also home to all manner of monsters, dragons and demonic beings. It is a place where magic is a tangible force, capable of creating or destroying objects and creatures in a flash. It is a place that has developed high technology, invisibility suits, laser rifles, force fields. It is a highly unstable and unpredictable place, full of danger. But it must remain forever in a balance of good and evil, for our worlds are connected. For that purpose I have been sent to find people of good heart and strong body to take to the parallel dimension to wage the war against the ever-increasing tides of evil. Sally's body went limp as she absorbed this information, knowing that it couldn't possibly be true, and yet feeling with absolute certainty that it was the undeniable truth. She thought for a moment. "How long do I have before you want me to leave?" she asked. "There is a portal opening twenty-four hours from now. I can give you until then. Meet me here at elven-thirty tomorrow night" Sally was silent as she got out of the car and walked the few minutes to her hotel. Mr. Silver leant against his car, listening to silence of the night. "I'm ready." She had approached so quietly that even he had not heard her. She would make an excellent addition to the forces of good. "Follow me." Mr. Silver led the way through the broken door of an abandoned building. He stopped in a bare room with no doors or windows and a cement floor. Withdrawing a grey control device of some sort from his coat pocket, he pointed it at the floor and pressed a black button on its surface. A translucent wave erupted from the gadget and spread over the floor, turning into a rippling tunnel of pulsating lights and shimmering waves of energy. Mr. Silver turned to Sally one last time. "I must warn you, If you jump you will be face danger at every turn, and you'll rarely even be able to sleep in complete safety. But you will be fighting with the good guys and helping your entire race. And I can promise you, you will never be bored" Sally nodded. Then she jumped. Author's Note: Well, not counting my laughable primary school efforts, this is the first story I've ever actually finished! I know it's short and kind of weird, but if I try anything bigger I'll probably never get it done! So that's it for now. Where will Sally find herself when she emerges from the tunnel? Who will she meet? What will she do? Will she ever get back to Earth? Those questions and many more will be answered in the sequel! (Well, maybe, if I ever get around to writing one!) For now, I'm Digitalis and you've been a wonderful audience!
